I used to run premium in my '97 D90, but only because it was supercharged and the detonation (pinging) could have potentially damaged the engine. Other that that vehicle, I've only ever run regular and never had any issues.
The worst part is that if you condition your engine to run premium, you're stuck running it and can't switch back.
