The crowns of your pistons are remarkably carbon free and other than some obvious oil leaks, I don't see too much mechanically wrong in your pictures. You said "smoke was pouring out of the hood"....was it black smoke?
As a veteran of several blown engines (rod through block; broken crank; dropped valve etc.) I can tell you that you know about it when there is a catastrophic mechanical failure. This may be a blown gasket or ruptured tube of some kind. Still overheating an aluminum engine is always serious......Happy sleuthing!
