You should have done a compression test on the motor before tearing it apart.
When you tore down the engine, did any cylinder have antifreeze in it?
Did your oil have coolant in it?
Was the overflow boiling water?
I'll just throw out a theory going by the information you've posted. Again, this is just a theory as there is not enough information to make an accurate diagnosis.
I say either a head or liner cracked. When it cracked, it allowed the engine to over heat. In addition, exhaust was being blown into the coolant system causing antifreeze to blow out of the expansion tank and cause the smoke under the hood. Depending on how long you ran the motor would determine if it's worth fixing.
1) I would have the heads tested. If they are ok, go ahead and get a valve job, flat mill, and new seals. If you want to make some more power, have them ported.
2) I would call D&D and get a used block. Also take the block to a machine shop to have it cleaned, honed, and new bearings installed.
3) Install a new cam. Something like a 258 or 260.
4) New timing set.
After you get everything back in the truck, you'll be golden. With extra power to boot!. You'll end up dropping about 1800 - 2000.00, but it's a better option than buying a junk yard motor.
