Oil from PA has high ash content, thus the buildup. Chevron makes good oil, too. My dad had a 73 Chevy PU with 454, always ran Chevron oil (he was a Chevron dealer duh!). He tore it down when it had 154k on it, valve train almost looked new, no deposits.

I had a 84 Mustang GT years ago, I ran Pennzoil in it, looked like crap inside when I traded it in. I"ve never used it again.
