Not only no power to break them, no power at all, so they needed the gears to go anyplace. You can go anywhere with real low gears and little HP, but when you add the HP then stuff is going to break. My dad had a 46 Willys Jeep when I was a kid, had 5:33's in it, never broke anything due to the whopping 40 or so HP the flathead 4-banger made. Would climb a tree figuratively speaking but top speed was about 45-50 in overdrive downhill with a large tailwind.
