Default overheating problem.. need help

okay well i have a 2002 disco and it keeps on overheating. the check oil, service engine and battery light are on. some smoke comes out of the beginning of the exhaust where it begins to point backwards not downward. i also noticed what comes out of the muffler is kind of like quick puffs and not a continuous flow and its making a squeaking noise when i accelerate. not too loud though but any ideas of what the problem(s) may be?
so far i am very dissapointed
