Pioneer makes a shallow subwoofer. You could build the box so the sub fires Down, with 2" to spare, & have the port run forward. That would take a foot or so in height, then build drawers on top & still have of the unit to throw stuff onto...
Edit: Disco, did you take the rear door panel off & replace it with a flat piece? I was thinking of taking off the pocket & rear speaker box, & replacing the works with diamond plate...
