For your area, 10/30W or 10/40W is fine. I use Castrol's Blend which is a partial synthetic, using a K&N 3001 oil filter and changing it every 3000 miles.
Synthetic is good but as dirty as Rover engines get you still need the more frequent oil changes and then it is hard to justify the cost of a pure synthetic.
