THIS MAY HELP
AFFECTED RANGE:
All vehicles with R380 manual gearboxes up to VIN WA 408338
PROBLEM:
UNABLE TO SELECT Hi / Lo GEAR RANGE - NEUTRAL SWITCH SEIZED
Unable to switch between Hi/Lo transfer gearbox ranges. When switch is pressed
in an attempt to change transfer gear range, the instrument panel continually
displays ‘SELECT NEUTRAL’. This occurs even though neutral is actually selected.
CAUSE:
Neutral indicator nylon cam jammed against indicator switch due to lack of
lubrication.
The nylon cam is positioned on the remote selector shaft within the extension
housing. If this has been assembled without outer cam lubrication, the neutral
indicator switch contact pin will jam against it resulting in damage to the cam and
switch. When the switch jams, the ‘gear engaged’ signal is not detected so
preventing transfer gearbox electronic selection.
ACTION:
On customer complaint of the above condition, the nylon cam and neutral switch
will both require replacement. Refer to Workshop Manual repair number 37.16.29
for selector remote housing remove and refit. Use this repair information with the
following cam replacement instruction:
1. Remove neutral switch from remote
housing.
2. Remove nylon cam from remote
selector shaft by levering cam off with
a flat screw driver. It is likely that the
cam locating pin will have broken off
of the cam body and is still retained in
its location in the selector shaft. If this
is so, push broken pin remains from
the shaft.
