Are you talking about a drippin leak or is it just damp and collecting dust? Is it coming from the pinion seal and blow back under the diff housing or ir it the seal that goes around the third member, the large round housing with all the bolts?
As for the fluid, use synthetic 80/90W gear oil which should be changed every 30,000 miles.
