Mine failed at 55.000 kms.
I suggest you to change the thermistor and those little parts, dont forget the 10 head bolts too.
My mistake, i wrote about water valve, there isn't any water valve, i mean thermistor.

Your gasket failed because your engine overheated, it happens to the most 1.8 K between 50.000-60.000 kms on clock.

As for your temp gauge, terrible design by the BMW engineers... Works fine untill you reach the normal temp. Then stucks on the middle and does not move even if your engine becomes a barbecue... Really terrible. You can only replace your little temp valve, its a cheap one and you ll have more reliable indications. This also happens on series 3 older BMWs.
