You could do a retrofit of the instrument lighting.....
You could do a retrofit of the existing lights with either the new generation of white LEDs (Luxor, one or three watt output)or even using fluroscent lighting with DC input.
Fair warning, Either is a exercise for the intermediate to advanced electronics hobbyist because you have to either pull the bulbs and replace them with the LEDs or install the LEDS side by side. The fluroscent lights in the portable scanners at the fleamarkets put out an amazing amount of light but they will too bright for night use.
