John, you’re going to have to remove the entire interior trim, grab handles, visors, dome lights, buttons etc and remove both the Headliner Boards from the interior roof of your Landrover.
Now you can use a nylon brush and scrub off all the old foam backing of course after removing all the old headliner material.
Purchasing spray adhesive and spraying behind your factory is a waist of your time and money. I’m well aware there are others on this list that have done so and had a good experience, so I’m not knocking anyone for trying to save some money along the way.
The problem exists because the foam backing has desinagrated from Age & Heat, now the Headliner Material has nothing left to attach to because the foam backing is gone.
NOTE: It is much harder to install the factory like Vinyl Foam Back Headliner as Original. The reason is the Vinyl Foam back will need to be installed using a heat gun to help soften the material to roll around the curves in the Foam of the existing Headliner board, Most shops are not experience or have the patients and will not recommend you go in that direction because of the cost which is involved to duplicate the original.
Its possible, if available,… if you insist on having the factory foam back vinyl headliner material used to see if Landrover North America has the factory boards in stock, if not cloth Foam back in the 1/8th inch is the direction you will be going.
You will need to make sure the correct width material is used. Most common ¼ inch material is only 54 inches wide, your vehicle will not designed for ¼ inch.
You will need a 64 inch material to properly do the job correctly because of the way your headliner board is designed. Also you will find that these materials are only available in the cloth series not the vinyl as original.
My Company has done many defenders over the years, if I can help you in any way just ask.
We service Landrover Orlando for the past 16 years as well as a sponsor for the floridalandroverclub.com
