Also, by chance did you have the vents open or the passenger window?
When I fitted my snorkel I got a marked increase in turbo noise, also funnily enough when I replaced the centre mid boxes of the exhaust system.
When a turbo goes you know about it! Either it dissintergrate making a hellofa noise or if the bearings go you'll get oil being pumped in to the exhaust system and the whole world will be lost behind you in a cloud of smoke!
