Hi Harold,
I usually recommend the shorter ones for OBDII trucks. It leaves enough room for the O2 bungs in front and behind the cat. When it comes to an OBDI truck you can get away with either. Don't worry that the originals are two different shapes. The Catco's will fit either side.
