Agree.

Your Tdi will black smoke when you dump the throttle a little anyway as the engine dumps a load more fuel in to the cylinders.

As for filters, if you feel like upgrading then K&N (cloth) and ITG (Foam) both do them for a 300TDI disco.

I have had both in my 200TDI, there is NO difference between them performance wise, but the ITG is a damned sight easier to clean and re-treat. Also cheaper IIRC.

Out of interest are we talking HUGE black cloud or just noticable?

Other things to consider are;

Dirty Intercooler, they do need cleaning out every now and again.

Timing belt out, when was the timing belt last changed?
