If the tach doesn't work and lights are dim, it might be a bad alternator. You might be able to get the alt checked for free although it's best to take it out first (about 30 mins work combined out & in)
IMO you will probably be sorry trying to drive 2 hours on your weekends. You'll likely end up with expensive towing bills and alot of frustration. Once you get all (most) the problems worked out, then is the time to roam far from home. Until then, what about 15 minute drives close to your fav repair shop!
These vehicles are finicky- if the baby-boomer Brits had built a steam powered Disco with little or no wires (the Series models), it would have been bullet proof but they jumped into the electronic/modern electrical systems age before the newer generation of engineers was out of their teens. Hence these vehicles have poor electricals. If you really enjoy your new Disco, you should be able to get it working well after some sustained effort - sounds like your not there yet.
