Default Question about power distribution?

Ok so with my front driveshaft removed I figured that I could still drive with the rear shaft. I have to put my DI into 4wheel in order to do this. Why is that?

Shouldn't I be able to drive with the rear driveshaft without beign in 4wheel drive? If so does that mean my front shaft ujoint problem could be a result of an underlying problem inside the transfercase or rear diff?

Thanks
Robert
