I can't tell you much about your gear problem as I drive an auto, but regarding your fuel consumption that sounds a bit excessive £10 per 30 miles, diesel is around £5 per gallon yes that’s rite 10 dollars a gallon here in the UK so your only getting 15 miles to the gallon. It sounds like your injectors need cleaning or at the very worst replacing, I would start with a fuel additive to clean the injectors and see if it improves your mileage. I drive an 03 TD5 and at the very worst in cold weather it has never dropped below 22 to the gallon doing short trips around town, on a run I’ll get 28 to the gallon, yours should be the same or even a little better running 4 cylinders and a manual gear box.
