Default Need a fuel pump in a hurry, what works?

I am in the process of buying a 92 RRC and am picking it up Saturday morning. It is sitting in the mechanics shop, not running. He says its a fuel pump. Im going to have the vehicle towed to my friends house (its in a different city) and try to replace the pump. Since I cannot order the correct pump and get it here in time, I was wondering what else works? Autozone and Napa do not have any in stock. I read somewhere that a different pump will work if the wires are cut and switched? At NAPA they have a Carter unit (P74006) that is supposed to work. Anyone know?
