Default New problem - oil in water

I now have a new problem that came out of nowhere! Its a Freelander KV6 2001 and all of a sudden I found the water filler bottle full of oil.
I drained the water system and refilled but after about 50km the water is full of oil again. I have spoken to a landrover garage who suspect it to be the oil cooler that is leaking. There is no sign of water in the oil.
Is there any way of checking to see where the leak is? and is it common for an oil cooler to start leaking.
As we are all well aware, landrover parts are not cheap, and I dont want to start replacing them unless I'm sure.
