I would agree.
I argue that everyone should try doing their own maintenance. Not that it saves money usually. But just to expand the mind and build a sense of self reliance. I suggest similar for every field of endeavor.
If you are an "artist" that relies on a single vehicle for transportation. Having your choice of classic range rover or series land rover to get to work could be a bad choice.
Classic anything for that matter.
BUT.. if you want something quirky to take care of on the weekends.. always have "plans for" and start conversations around. Pick up an old Rover.. or old Volkswagen the parts are all available and cheap. But their age dictates you do not trust them. Remember, they came from an era when people considered 100000 miles to be the upper extreme of vehicle life. On top of miles, they have age. Wires fall apart.. things you'd never think of corroding do... Technology and materials have come an incredibly long way since 1960.
That being said. I'm impressed with the engineering behind the series rover. Very simple and otherwise bomb proof if it weren't for incredibly inferior british materials.
I love classic cars.. but its totally illogical. They are all junk from a reasonable standpoint. They are always my third or fourth car around the house "for entertainment purposes only". I always feel sorry for that guy that can't afford 2 cars.. and chooses that 70 firebird in horrible but running condition instead of the Honda FIT.
There is one "classic" for which I have the utmost respect the mercedes w124 chassis vehicles. They were incredibly over engineered. If you get a running one of them... likely it will be running for another 400000 miles, and that's the petrol version in automatic. find a 5 speed diesel?! Then you're talkin.
