quick which thermostat is used on 1996 D1? Button or the egg shaped one?

Had the D1 overheat last night and I can not for the life of me find the thermostat. Is it on the passenger side of the engine compartment under the ovesrflow reservior or is it on the top of the engine block? I got to repair this out on the street so I want to make a mininium impact of dropped fluid, car and body related.
Help! I went to my local autoshop(autozone () and all they had was the button style that goes into the engineblock. Looked online and all I could find was for the 1998 D1 which uses the external egg shaped thermostat .
