Hi Phototone,
There are several reasons to have a second battery. My primary reason is that I have a winch that draws a lot from the battery.
With the proper battery management system connected you can use 1 battery for auxiliary equipment and keep the primary battery for running primary systems or you have the ability to run the batteries in parallel if desired. The other reason for me is that I run a tremendous amount of other electronic equipment (2 1000 watt amps, 4-7 inch monitors, 2 DVD players, 1 DVD/GPS player, a CB and a 400 watt inverter) that I would prefer to to keep on the secondary battery.

Mike and Adam: Here is the listing for the Luna Management system I found-

EQUIPT Expedition Outfitters - Intelligent Split Charging Kit

After looking at this I am thinking of using the Blue Sea Management system, the Luna runs $375.00 as apposed to this system that runs $150.00.

The link below shows the system and has a great audio description of the product:

West Marine: "Add-A-Battery" Dual Circuit System Product Display

I realize there are differences in the systems but for the price I think it is a good trade off.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Anthony
