if you are going to spend most of your time on-road and in the snow, getting a dedicated winter tire would be your best bet for traction. I think the hankook icebear comes in a 255/55-18 I run those (although not that size of course) on my audi in the winter and they are great - good traction on the street in the dry and in the snow. inexpensive too. not sure how they would do off road.
