Hey there Phil., ...lets see... I took mine apart a few months ago.. o.k., remove the cap, the spring-loaded button on the drivers side slides out, you might have to put it netural or reverse to do this, ( don't lose the spring and remember how the parts come out) then i believe theres a nut that has to be removed.
once that has been done, apply a bit of force from the bottom up on the shift knob and it will eventually free itself.
I dont have my disco here today, so i cant go out and verify. good luck, dan
