If you take off the interior trim panel on the rear tailgate door, the complete locking mechanism is fully visible, and if you are fairly mechanically minded you can figure out how it works and what might be wrong. The interior handle, and the exterior handle are coupled to the locking mechanism with rods that snap into fittings. There are adjustments. There is also (on the door sheet metal) a little tiny knob that you can turn to "lock out" the interior handle from opening the door (Child lockout). There are sliding parts for this that can become gunked up. Some zero residue parts cleaner sprayed on these parts to wash off congealed lubricant, followed with a light lubricant could do wonders.
