Hi Adam,
I would carefully check the engine compartment where the gas lines come up and check for any leaks. The fuel filter is located behind the passenger right rear wheel, towards the front of the wheel well. I would look to see if you see there any leaks around the filter and then follow the lines to the front of the car and check those as well.
If the filter is clogged you will not have the thick smell of gas because the engine is being robbed of gas.
The things I would be checking are spark plugs, spark plug wires, coil. It sounds like your not getting good spark and that is why you are smelling gas. (That is if you are not leaking gas somewhere) There are many possibilities.

That is where I would start.
