I was in Elmhurst, Quees the other day and used my membership with another roadside service company to remove a truck I had just bought. The first towing company to respond was a local one. They called me up and said they had been notified of my need for a tow by my roadside assistance company. The dispatcher then went on to list all the incidental charges that would need to be paid for in advance. The total for my 72 mile "free" tow was $350!
Needless to say, I hung up. Within seconds of getting off the phone with the dispatcher, her boss called to recommend that I simply have the truck towed into their shop so that they could fix whatever was wrong with it. (There wasn't anything wrong with it besides it not being registered.) I can only imagine what kind of bill I would have gotten if I had let them get their hands on the truck!
In the end I got a tow from a local (to me) towing company and the truck was back at the shop by that evening with no additional charges.
