Default burning oil?

Hey guys. I checked the oil on the classic yesterday and it was very close to the 'low' line on the dipstick and pretty dark. What is strange is that it was just changed about than 100 miles ago. The only driving I've done has been some short 10 -15 mile trips.
I looked for a leak and didn't see anything obvious (I habitually look for leaks anyway and haven't seen a drop from anywhere). So I am assuming that the classic is suddenly burning a lot of oil. If that is the case, what factors would cause that and what do I need to look out for? Up until last oil change it has been running on 10w40 and not burning oil at all. I tried a synthetic blend for one cycle, but then went back to 10w40. Would that have any bearing?
