Yeah, start the truck and with the radio off, hit "Auto" on the climate control and the compressor should kick on... It will be a quick noise and your idle should jump a little. You can verify its operation by hitting the "ECON" button a few times... If you don;t hear anything when you hit "ECON", the compressor is not coming on -> needs R-134a...
Most repair shops like Midas and PepBoys offer a summer A/C check special for about $20... Take it to them and you can have the system leak checked and filled for less than $50...
