Default Loss of Power, & Engine warning light

2002 Canadian Freelander driving at 100km per hour, when engine warning light with an exclamation mark in. The power then also died, and if you try to accelerate there is little to no response. If you try to restart it just makes a clicking sound. It will start if you use booster cables, so initially thought faulty alternator and duff battery so have replaced the battery, but the fault still happens. Any suggestions.
