Default 2000 Discover intermittent no start

I have a 2000 Disco II with 134,000 miles. It has recently developed a intermittent starting problem. This has occurred three times, after sitting for two to three days it will not start. The engine turns over with no problem but will not catch. I have verified that it is getting spark. The plugs smelled of gas but where not noticeably wet when pulled after several minutes of cranking. After several applications of starter fluid the motor will catch but runs very rough for a minute or two before smoothing out and running fine. Once it is running it drives fine and the problem does not immediately come back. Any ideas?
Thanks
Patrick
