Yes, it can be removed and still drive it for testing. That maybe a seperate issue from the chirping. General rule of thumb, if the DS only has one grease point vs three, replace it, as it will go eventually. Heat burns up the grease and bang out it goes.
Chirping,,, is it coming from under the hood? the undercarraiage? We may need more information.
