I Hope that you have solved your problem by now, but if not I had a similar problem on my 1998 exdi and found that it was caused by a bad/loose connection in the cable harness up against the bulkhead on the left side of the egine compartment. I could stop the problem by moving the cables.
I disconnect all the cables and sprayed with contact cleaner and reseated.
