Default noise when changing gear on defender 98

I am looking at a 1998 300tdi defender 90, 59500 miles, however when i test drove it there is a whining/whistle sound that comes from somewhere below when the clutch is depressed at each gear change--this noise gradually dies down and stops if i keep the clutch down but keep rolling. it also stops when we engage the next gear and release the clutch. We thought it might be the release bearing but we replaced the whole clutch inc bearing and it still is there ? Any ideas please.
