Default Brakes '00 Disco II

I own a 2000 Discovery II. I had the brake pads replaced by the dealer a couple of years back--around 45K miles. Six months ago, the dealer said my pads needed to be replaced and rotor needed to be turned. Having driven heavy vehicles most of my life I am surprised that brakes would go so quickly. I held off as the brakes appeared to be working fine. I am now at 87K miles and the brakes have started to squeal.
Is it normal for Disco II brakes to wear so quickly?
How many miles should I expect to get on a set of pads?
What are good and reliable replacement pads and inexpensive source for pads?
