One more J--P convert, this is great, especialy with the vehicle you found.
The response you got from you ABS brakes is normal.
Yes, at some point you will want to upgrade your rear axles, especially if you drop in a locker. Our diff. housing are not like Dana's, Rover gives us one size and the up grade are diffs or axles only.
As for a lift on a D1, 2 to 3 inches is common, any more then that and you will also have to replace the front and rear drive lines to adjust for drive line angle.
