I've not heard of the flange problem before your post. The price you were quoted may be a bit high, and I know there are aftermarket Y pipes available for RR for the various configuration. I believe I was quoted $345 for one for my sons RR. I stopped trying to remember details and dimensions a long while ago, but I remember that one Y pipe, like maybe it was for thr LWB, can be cut back for the Disco and SWB, so maybe one of them would work on your ninety with some bodging. Carquest has a variety of exhaust parts, including many shapes and sizes of flanges. The other option might be to just cut it off, and make a slip joint to the muffler.
We have 3 different V8 landys, and I've worked on lots of others (lots) , and I honestly never saw this problem.
