2 possibilities come to mind. One my be more likely if you have a newer, plastic tank. Was that particular day much warmer than many in the recent past? The fuel could easily have been ground temp (roughly 55F) and as it warmed up, in this recent warm wx we have been having, expanded.
Second possibility is that your evaporative solinoid valve (mounted atop or near your charcoal canister) is not cycling. It is supposed to cycle periodicly to draw vapors from the tank into the plenum. This compensates for the returning fuel to the tank via the line from fuel pressure regulator to tank.
The system is not vented. In fact no car made (imported to or made in the US) in the last 15 years has a vented fuel system.
