The wires on the cap on the expansion tank are for level of coolant. Check the connections right behind the distributor. Those are the sensors you are looking for. Maybe it is just unplugged.

I wish I could remember which one is for the guage. Ryan may be right. For sure the wires on the expansion tank are for level maybe they have additional duties.
