The best point and shoot digital cameras out there right now are the canon powershots. Problem is there's a little on the expensive side.
As for megapixels the difference between 5 and 6 megapixels is so miniscule it doesn't matter. Thing is the general public will pay more for a 6 megapixel camera so the prices are generall much, much higher. Now if it was the difference between a 1 and 2 megapixel camera that'd be different.
