A friend of mine recently bought the same vehicle, he has owned many Rovers in the past and also has a nicely built 97 D1 currently, he lost the tires to destroyed or failed side walls in Death Valeey a few weeks back.
You can not down size to a smaller wheel do to clearance issues, I'll try and find out from him what tire he switched to for a better then factory tire.

Just heard back from my friend Jeffrey, here is part of his e-mail, hope it helps.

The shoes I'm waiting for are:

Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour in 265/60/R18.

A new size, as yet unavailable, but expected at the distributor any day.
