As they start to naturally stretch and are on the wrong pulley or the wrong set up they start to do weird things and make noise. Trust me seen them on older D1s and I did it to a D2 once.

May want to replace the tensioner if you are having that sort of problems at 8000 miles. Rovers are know to have questionable tensioners.
