im sure there is a thread that has this on there but id like to just see more opinion

Im gathering info for my new defender ground up build...Im hoping to put 35s on and i was wondering first should i go for the 2 3 4 or 5in lift?

second question is, Im not sure what engine Im throwing in yet but all rover engines are a bit underpowered i find...and with 35s it is going to have some vary tall gearing...what should i do to gear it down a bit is there a gear box/transfer box that i could find that will gear everything down?

another question back to my lift ...i have a disco with a 2in lift and it wanders like crazy witch is due to still having original radius arm...Im wondering if there is a easier or cheaper fix than replacing the arms...

another one about the suspension...keeping in mind that i live in BC Canada ...what type or brand name do you think i should go for ex.(oem, scorpion racing ext)

One Last question....The only item that i cannot find for my build is defender doors ...well atleast back passenger doors...if anyone know anyone that has some for sale i would be interested...also if anyone one knows of a supplier that i could find them at an auto wreckers or whatever? preferably cheaper...regardless i need them or ill have to build a 2door :bawling:

if you read all that your crazy and thank you ....any and all comments and info knowledge is GREATLY APPRECIATED!...
thanks!

hey so i am about to start collecting info and parts for my second ever ground up build. its going to be a defender body with military defender frame, part disco or range rover running gear thats all i know so far

I was wondering first of all about different engine possibility's and what might be better or suitable or cheaper....i mean there is the tdi option but thats a near 4grand to find a used one in BC Canada. I could always stick with easy to find and work on v8, and if so i would like to find at least a 4.6! but i was hoping maybe somebody knew of any other engine and maybe transmissions from north american vehicles (dodge chev ect) that would be suitable ex. (fits, has more power than average rover engine, and mates up to rover transmission,or has transmission that mates to the rest of the rover running gear.....if any one has any ideas or has had luck with any type modification engine swap...i would love to hear it! if any forms i may have missed have any info throw the link my way Please and thanks

I really would Love any info even if the swap wasnt easy and takes lots of modifying id still love to know the details !

Hi guys,I am new to this site,I just got an '86 defender 90 only had it 1 day and i've got problems.started getting a clunking/clanging noise from what i thought was the front propshaft, on getting under it appears to be the front diff, because as the car is driven slowly forward (or reverse) the propshaft where it bolts to the flange at the diff seems to turn normally then spin a bit (as if some of the gears in the diff have lost a few teeth) creating the noise,so i removed the front propshaft hoping i could still use the car in rear drive only till i get the front diff fixed, guess what! the only thing that moves/spins is the flange at the front of the transfer case where the front prop was bolted to,why no rear drive? can anyone help.thanks up front,:help

He'd like to go to an auto box as well.
So, the question is, what auto box does he need. The prop comes off the wrong side(compared to a 90/Defender) of the transfer box on a P38 if I'm not mistaken.
Has anyone got any suggestions please?

Many thanks.

Greetings,

I'm obviously new here (but not new to forums, so I did indeed utilize the search function and came up empty) but I had a few questions about this everlasting topic.

I live in New York and have property in rural Pennsylvania so the importing destination would be one of those two places.

Is it possible to import a NEW Defender, right-hand-drive from Malta (I have family there) or left-hand-drive from Italy, have it classified/imported as "Off Road Use Only" or "Farm Use Only" (my property in PA could definitely pass for both uses) and hold on to it until it ages long enough to be registered legally in the U.S.A. (25 years) or Canada (15 years)? I have family in Toronto so I'd be able to get it done there as well.

I know this sounds kinda desperate but I could start it up basically every day, run it around the grounds to keep everything moving, actually use it for off-road-private-property type stuff and then register it legally when I'm able to do so. I could keep it out of the rain/elements, keep it clean and garaged, so I wouldn't have to browse ebay for handyman specials. Has anyone ever done this, or does anyone think this is possible? I really want to get my hands on one before it gets discontinued and replaced with something cheesy and cookie-cutter.

Thanks in advance for all your help, this seems to be a really great forum.

-Andrew
