Rodent got into some wiring under the hood, towed to local dealer (wouldnt start), they replaced battery, some wiring, distributor, coil and a few plug wires and got it running...also did the fuel tank recall - they checked pressure at the rail and said it was fine.

It idles like crap (hunting idle but not random, it comes/goes)...off idle it runs pretty well, dies once in awhile while barely moving (parking spot, in/out of driveway etc) but at speed its fine and seems to have good power. It doesnt smoke, water temp is fine and doesnt overheat/fluctuate...has a large hole in the exhaust right after the muffler (rusted)...wasnt going to fix until I got the idle sorted.
Replaced plugs (champion), wires (8mm kingsborne), IACV, replaced some vac lines - anything suspect I could find...no change. Something started leaking coolant into the rear of the valley and down the back of the engine - snugged up all the hose clamps and it went away. I have put very few miles on it (~50) and the coolant level seemed to drop just a tad but it was also leaking for a few days so hard to tell exactly.

Compression numbers:

1) 145
2) 165
3) 150
5) 150
6) 145
7) 155
8) 128

Batt: 12.3v with car off, 13.93v at idle.

Vac gauge reads around 18 at startup...once it settles in to its hunting idle when it went low it was about 15-16 and when the idle went up it was around 19.

Maf readings seem OK:
ignition on v: .34, at idle 1.5-1.8 as the idle surges

13.86v at idle, base setting reading is 1.86

When I unplug the TPS the idle is around 1050 and does NOT surge. If I put the car in reverse/drive the idle drops low and then stabilzes around 550-600 (tiny bit of a hunt, not nearly as bad)

Thoughts?

Should I just throw a new (or used known working) TPS in it?

Thank you!!

Hi, I have this posted under TPS problems post as well. Re-posting here in case it is too much to page down for people....

Good day.

First a context: (from perspective, I am a newbee keep in mind, and fairly inexperienced with few diagnostic tools and capabilities, and far away from local, professional help... - given this, I still want to try myself first...) and cannot find the root cause.

Problem: 95 Disco - hesitation at depress of pedal - I have some stalling as well, intermittent but typically at low idle and when the vehicle is warm - sometimes sluggish, but typically from stop to start - I have replaced all indicated parts / per-codes, and more.. - done cleanings as indicated.

Replaced TPS, IAC, Coolant and temp fuel sensors, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil
Cleaned all vac lines, MAF, TB, IAC - some of these over and over again - I had as recently as 2 weeks ago a code for the Coolant Temp Sensor show up (probably was there but masked by other higher priority codes (my terminology)), replaced that however I think it was the connection to the old one that was the prob' - this latest replacement and new plugs seem to do the best job for performance gains, however I need more time to evaluate, as I think the system may be deteriorating (or will) over time with following observations...

1) Lambda sensors are getting 'gunked up' and failing. Black carbon. I put both new sensors in awhile back and they are reporting bad again. Recently, I was able to clean one, and then the other (heat, cool, then gently tap to remove cracked carbon, as indicated in another post - the codes were not thrown any longer (and it was running really great!), then the left bank code returned 2 days later, after 50 miles driving) and started mis-behaving some..

2)TPS was replaced due to code thrown, but TPS code is still reading bad with replacement...I cannot understand this one, I have not traced the wiring as that seems to be a really large job with all the wiring.

3) Plugs are black, no matter what driving conditions, none are wet.

4) I'm losing coolant, however the oil looks fine - I haven't traced this down yet...lowered priority. 'however I am hoping that I don't have an internal vacuum problem and the coolant is escaping from within, and I just don't smell/see it.

5) I'm going to replace the fuel filter - haven't had time. Fuel pressure is within specs, this probably won't do a thing.

Very simply, what else can I check here that are likely culprits, given disclaimer as being a fair novice / capabilities please?

I had been having trouble with my 95 disco not going into gear. Sometimes it worked fine and others no movement of the shift selector caused any response in tranny. I had checked the fluid to see if it were low and it was actually very high. I drained the excess and have driven about 40 miles with smoother shifting and no lapse in function. I'm curious however if there may be something to why the previous owner had over filled this thing by more than a quart. Short of just pure ignorance, is there any reason someone would over fill when it is clearly understood this should never be done? Several things have gone wrong with this rover and the more I tear into it the more I realize how poorly it had been treated so I have no idea what to expect from the truck in the future. The entire interior has been removed at one time or another and every piece of plastic is broken and busted, with screws missing, clips broken and just over all in very poor shape. none of which was visible when I looked at the truck. I am replacing all filters and fluids and I've replaced the steering pump, radio, dash plastics, tires. Is there anything else i should service or inspect to ensure good mechanical function on this 150K mile truck?

Greetings,

I have a '98 disco that has given me pure hell over the years. I recently paid a ton to have some work done hoping this would be the end of repairs for awhile, of course I was wrong. Now I have a new issue that has popped up.

No matter what the surface/incline/etc. when the car is put into park, it will not stay in park! It will roll all over the place and I'm not talking a little. I have used the hand brake to stop this. I had a tow driver take a look at it and he "jiggled/moved" the gears around and got it to "engage" in park again. A fluke I thought. Then it did it again a day later. I did the same thing (moving the gears around) and finally got it to stay in park. There are no other transmission issues at all and a new transmission was put in the car at 40k (now it's at 70k and barely gets driven). Sounds like a park pawl problem?
I called my mechanic and they need to rip out the transmission to diagnosis anything, which of course I don't want to pay for after just spending a ton. Yet I am concerned that this is not only not safe (don't want the hand brake to fail and roll into a house/car), but perhaps taxing my transmission by using the hand brake instead of the park gear. They told me the pawl would simply be broken thus I would have no way to be able to get it into park, yet I can. I wasn't sure if this part could be "worn" down and that is why it's giving me trouble, but they said no- it would just break. Any ideas as to why this is happening and why it won't stay in park? Is it possible it's just not "meshing" into park and it's not a mechanical issue (doesn't sound possible). It seems like I'm going to have to end up having them take out the transmission to figure this out, yet I really can't afford that right now. Does it sound like a parking pawl or could it be something else? I'm not sure if I should be using the car either for safety concerns and possible creating further damage. Again, never had any trouble with the transmission.

Kind thanks

1997 Disco, 167k, all stock. The truck starts from cold on the first turn of the key every time. When I do a lot of stopping and starting of the truck, running errands for a couple of hours, etc...it will begin to hesitate slightly on start up. It will start, then the idle will drop to under 500 RPM momentarily, then pull back up to normal. After a couple of starts like this I'll get a start up, coughing of the engine, then it dies like it has lost fuel and won't start up again. I've found that if I go to the "tire" valve mounted on the fuel rail I can release a great amount of pressure from the system when this start up problem happens. If I hold this valve open until almost all the pressure is released, the truck starts right up again. I don't have any fault codes. So what should I start with guys? Fuel filter, pressure regulator, bad injectors? Help me out. Thanks!

I had an old Trooper that had an oil line do the same thing and a mechanic shop just had some fabricated that were the correct length and fitting, is something I can do with these or I would almost just order them if I can...
I went wheeling today, nothing serious, no wading, no extreme angles, nothing too serious. Got to one area, went to position myself to navigate the ruts, it started to mis fire, out of the blue, ran really ruff and stalled out, I tried to start it back up but it just cranks. Got frustrated let it sit for a bit, cranked it again got a buck and a kick out of it and shut off. but it did smell like fuel coming from the exhaust pipe. So I said leave it for a while let it cool down and collect my bearings. Went wheeling in my buds rig in the mean time.

Came back fell in the mud swore, stood up. Opened hood checked all electrical connectors, checked all plug wires. All good, got in same thing again no start just a buck and a cough and dead again. so we decided I may have to be pulled out of the trail and CAA it home. As soon as my friend got his winch hooked up to pull me back it started back up and ran fine, put it in reverse and got the fuck out of the trail. Got off the highway up the road from my house, and it started again, hit construction and it just died, could not get it to do more then a cough and a buck. Called Caa and towed it to the work shop.

Anyone got any idea's? Experience this problem before? I want to try things but would rather know for certain whats wrong before I go around buying all these parts I dont need.

Whats been done
New sending unit, nuts, and olives
8 New NGK G power plugs
newer NGK wires
Newer fuel filter
K&N air filter recently cleaned.

Thanks.
