I have a 96 Defender 90 Tdi.
It has developed a repetative knocking noise, which appears to be worse when going at a constant speed. It is dampened by applying the breaks. It sounds like it is coming from under the cubby box, so I'm thinking something near the gearbox is causeing it. It is intermitent, and disappears for minutes before reappearing. The frequency of the knocking does increase with road speed, but not engine speed. Any idea I would be most greatful! MIKE. ![]() |

Have a look at the handbrake. Does the knocking change in reverse? (I had an intermittent problem where the handbrake jammed on and needed a sharp acceleration to release. Turned out the brake lining had come off the shoe and was jamming when I reversed it to park.)
Other option is the rear propshaft at that age it might need a look. |
