Unhappy Big problems with 6.2 gmc v8

Hi, I am experiencing big problems with my land rover 90 6.2 v8 gmc fitted with a Santana box.

I'm shocked by its poor performance!, I only brought it as it was suppose to pull like a train at speed, yet I can tell no difference at all between this and my other land rover 90 tdt 200, with a 3ton trailer on the back it still dies up a hill exactly the same as the 200tdi yet its a 6.2 v8 with 300lbs of torque and 160bhp.

I just can not understand this!, has anyone got any information or know anything I can try, as surely this can not be right?

Would appreciate any help at all guys.

Its hard to diagnose faults such as these but Ive had a V8 gm diesel in a rangerover it was ok I suppose but not overly impressed with it im assuming you are in the UK and the engine came from samurai conversions.

Firstly mine came with reciepts for 6k for rebuild,kit and fitting when I got it engine had covered 28k since the rebuild.on closer examination if that engine had been rebuilt ill eat my hat it was badly worn more like it had done 280k samurai went tits up last year due to the amount of claims against them compounded with a terrible reputation so odds on the engine you have was crap and worn before it was fitted.

barring getting injection timing checked I would check the compressions (mine were poor at best) and make sure the engine can breathe the air filter set up on mine was abysmal.

If you want my advice get rid of it and get a mazda 3.5 SLTi (built by perkins) far far better lump with better power and drivability will still turn in 30+ mpg the best diesel engine ive ever owned in a Range rover.

Im gonna get so much flak for this but the Yanks havent mastered the art of building good small diesel engines GM are especially poor.

But
Fuel Starvation????

I can only relate to my GM V8,,when the fuel filter starts to clog it turns into a dog.no balls no tow speed no nothing,,and it shifts eraticly trying to accellerate.

99% of performance related issues with this engine come down to injectors, injector pump and pump timing.

And as for you Onslow, I have two words for you! Your right! Not only can we not make one, our government, in their infinite wisdom, can't seem to allow us to import them either.

The Cummins diesels are a very good units.They are a US company! A turbo charged in-line six out of the Dodge 3/4 ton and + trucks would most likely twist the axles off a Rover and blow up everything in between. But they do make smaller units.

I love 4BT and 6BT engines. In fact, I bought(for resale) a 75KW generator powered by a 4BTA and hated to sell it because I loved listening, looking, and tinkering with it. If Katrina hadn't come along, I'd probably still have it and started my own electric company.
However. I think 6BT sized units are abit too much for any Land Rover (gearbox anyway) Way too much torque, a bit too long, and too heavy. 4BT is more engine than a 300Tdi, but I think it's also about 100 pounds heavier.

Alas, that is something Cummins do very well. Big and heavy with nut busting, pretzel twisting, huge gob's of torque. Dodge don't even offer the diesel unit in the Power Wagon, even with 3/4 ton axles due to the fact it has selectable lockers and the engine makes so much torque. I have given thought to retrofitting a Cummins diesel to a Rover. But after all the modifications and axle swaps etc I think it would be simpler to just swap the body of a rover with a Dodge pick-up and call it a day. This would just ruin a good Rover so I'm not going to go there. But I do still think that diesels in trucks just make sense. The 4BT unit sounds a better bet ! Any idea where I can find some spec's?

Since the Cummins 4BT engines are used in so many applications, it's hard to know what spec could be applied to automotive use. The generator had a slightly different turbo than the marine application, and also a heavier flywheel.
A friend in the marine diesel business tells me they are rated in the 110HP range in boats, but I have no figures for torque curves. I never loaded the generator to full capacity, but ran the house (maybe 8-12kw loading)for a few days, and it seemed like the fuel tank would not go down, so it has to be a fairly economical engine.
