Default buying a defender

Hello everybody .. I am planning on buying a 93 defender single cab pick -up (90 inch base) . It has a 3.5 v8 engine and a 5 speed box and transfer box .
The owner tells me it needs a new clutch but I am afraid of it having a faulty gear box or transfer box .. Is there any way to check and make sure the gear box & transfer box are in good operating condition without moving the vehicle even with a faulty clutch ??????

thanks

nice find!!! u must not b in the states? so the def can not drive at this time? if u can drive her u should find a local indy LR shop or dealer to get the whole rover looked over if u r really going to buy this one. it might b $$$ but worth it for the price of a def 90.

You didn't say, but I presume you're not in the US (I doubt anyone over here would convert an NAS to single cab, and there were no 93 90s)
It likely has an LT77 gearbox, and doubtless has an LT230 transfer case. They are both pretty rugged, and even though most of the '93 110s over here were converted to R380 gearboxes, the LT77 is still a good box. The only problem they ever had was the splined shaft between the two was not cross drilled for lubrication, and can get clunky.
Puting a clutch in a V8 Defender is a very simple process, and takes about 6 hours.

The way to tell the difference between R380, and LT230 is the location of reverse. In an LT77, reverse is to the left and up; in an R380 it is to the right and down. They are both 5 speed.
