cold start problem

i have just bought my first landrover - 1989 2.5 turbo diesel defender 110, can someone tell me if the orange dash light should go out when the glow plugs are hot, is there a timer to control this- any info on improving cold start performance would be great- thank-you ,pete

There is definetly a glow plug timer on the L / R - Diesel.

If they are the origanal glow plugs 17 years old then they are long overdue for replacing .

Changing the glow plug's will make a BIG difference.
